Skating was practiced in cold climates, where lakes and rivers freeze during winter. In the 12th century, William Stephanides mentions the presence of skaters in London. Skating was also popular in the Netherlands, where it is used to navigate the extensive network of canals. Back then the skates were made of bone and tied to the shoes with ropes. Skaters use poles with a sharp point to propel themselves on the ice.

The invention of iron-bladed skates was a major improvement because having sharp edges penetrated the ice and allowed skaters to move without support, using the characteristic side-to-side movement.

In the 19th century there were several advances that determined the modern form of sport: 1.-The appearance of steel blades, much lighter and more resistant, and with greater curvature, more appropriate for making turns and pirouettes. Skates with blades permanently attached to boots were also started.
2.-The first artificial ice rinks, mostly outdoors, although the first covered rinks also appeared at the end of the century.
This increased participation in sport.
