CAPE TOWN South Africa

Writer: Alex Parra ArcosAlex Parra Arcos

Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa, after Johannesburg. Cape Town is famous for its port, as well as for its natural conjunction of flora, Table Mountain and Cape Point. It is also the most popular tourist destination in Africa. Since 2007 the city has an estimated population of 3.5 million inhabitants.

In 2014, Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by both The New York Times and The Daily Telegraph. Cape Town was one of the host cities of the tournaments of 1995 Rugby World Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Cape remained under Dutch control until the 1780´s, when the Dutch fought in the American War of Independence and in the wars of the French Revolution and Napoleonic times, alongside France against the United Kingdom. As a consequence, the British invaded the Cape Colony in 1795. By this time, the VOC had already lost almost all of its influence in Cape Town and was practically on the verge of bankruptcy. When the Dutch fell to the British, the latter were assigned to a garrison at the Cape with the excuse of preventing a French invasion.

Also On Robben Island ('seal island'), island very close to Cape Town, the leader of the anti-apartheid movement and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Nelson Mandela, was imprisoned for 27 years.

An average of 2 million tourists visit Cape Town every year. It is the most famous city in South Africa, which can be enjoyed with attractions, sights and activities.

Regarding outdoor activities, Cape Town has a variety of sports such as climbing, diving, golf and paragliding, among others. The beaches are ideal for water sports such as surfing, windsurfing, and kayaking. The most popular is diving, which is why it is common to find shark caves. Cape Town's most popular sports by participation are cricket, swimming and rugby.

The Waterfront is situated, the City of Cape Town. Adrian van der Vyver designed the complex. The V&A Waterfront is elegantly integrated into the “mother city” seaport, in operation since 1860. The complex houses more than 400 stores combining international and local brands. You can find a variety of bars and restaurants, one of which I recommend is the QUAY FOUR for its service and variety of food and drinks.

Long Street is located in the center of Cape Town. It is the nucleus in which the multiple cultures that meet in this fabulous South African city are concentrated. It has a length of 3.8 kilometers. An endless street where various restaurants, bars and pubs are concentrated where you can enjoy all the dishes and drinks of Cape Town's diverse gastronomy. In addition, in this street there are many local businesses where artisan products are sold. All African art is concentrated on this street and is at your fingertips. Precisely, Long Street is considered to be the perfect place to go shopping in the city.
