America

Is the second continent biggest of hearth after Asia. The largest urban agglomerations in America are Mexico City, New York, São Paulo, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogotá. Due to its large size and geographic characteristics, in some cultures, America is traditionally divided into North America, Central America, and South America. Some geographers consider Central America as a sub-region within North America. Taking into account their cultural characteristics, Anglo-Saxon America and Latin America are distinguished.

The new continent America in honor of Americo Vespucci to whom both the treaty and the map attributed the discovery. Vespucci, a Florentine-born navigator who made a trip to the service of Spain, was probably the first European to propose that those lands were actually a new continent and not part of Asia as Christopher Columbus thought. Following the line of the other continents with a feminine name, the name of the explorer was latinized and feminized, resulting in America.

The words Latin and American are understood in different ways in other languages, which can cause misunderstandings. In Germanic languages such as English, the English word "America" is a false friend; it usually doesn't mean America, but the United States. America translates into English as The Americas ('The Americas'). A similar situation is found in Spanish, where American sometimes does not mean North America but, specifically, American; use that is not recommended, as clarified by the Royal Spanish Academy in its "Pan-Hispanic Dictionary of Doubts.
